Each year at this time, I find myself reflecting on the best qualities of my career choice. No matter how difficult the day-to-day routines of being an educator seem to be, I am reminded that each day I am touching the future in some remote way. I have the chance to “speak life” into the dreams of young adults. At the same time, I have the power to crush those dreams with the wrong words. It is a powerful reminder of the role I play as a high school teacher. When I meet my colleagues in the hallway at the end of every 50 minutes, we act silly, greet students, giggle, groan, and sometimes just support each other when times get hard.
So, I too, appreciate teachers. I know their inner turmoils and struggles. I’m a cog in this big wheel of education. I’m thankful for the support of “family” within my hallway and my incredible administrators who “have my back.” We carry a heavy load and the burden of the future lies on our shoulders. The public watches and judges us each day!
As a teacher-author of curriculum, I am reminded of the first-year teacher who can barely keep up with the pace, and the teacher with the newborn who had no sleep last night. Or, the seasoned teacher with elderly parents that need care. We all need to be appreciated. Fourteen of my friends have come together for TEACHER APPRECIATION WEEK to celebrate YOU!
